Say Cheese! And It Might Actually Be Good For You

Over the past decade, the amount of misinformation coming out of the FDA that has been debunked is alarming.  Whether it was that fat is bad.  Or that sugar was better than fat.  Or that artificial sweeteners were healthy.  So it should come as no surprise that a recent study is finding that cheese may actually be good for you.  

 Just an ounce (about a slice) of cheddar cheese will run you 9 grams of fat and 180 mg of sodium. It’s also high in saturated fat and cholesterol, and for a long time these stats put cheese automatically on the “bad” list.  But should it be?  Continue reading “Say Cheese! Are Pop Tarts Healthier Than Avocados? The FDA Thinks SO

The FDA is responsible for a lot of things, and one of those is regulating what health claims companies are allowed to put on food packaging.  Currently, in order to use the term “healthy” on a product’s packaging, the product in question must not exceed three grams of fat.  So, according to what the FDA tells us, Frosted Flakes cereal and Pop Tarts are healthy foods, but foods containing large amounts of nuts are not.  Goodness!  This means we could never call an avocado “healthy”, because one avocado contains a whopping 21 grams of fat!   Continue reading “Are Pop Tarts Healthier Than Avocados?
